Quick answer: A black and white Maltipoo is a Maltese and Poodle mix with a two color coat, usually a white base with black patches (called a parti pattern) or a black coat with white on the chest, feet and face (called a tuxedo). Because the Maltese is always white, the black comes from the Poodle parent, so black and white Maltipoos are less common than white, cream or apricot. They grow to the same size as any Maltipoo, about 5 to 20 pounds.
Black and white is one of the less common Maltipoo colors, and it gives Maltipoos a really striking look. The pattern can range from lots of small spots to a simple two toned coat.
Types of Black and White Maltipoos
Parti: Mostly white (at least half) with large black patches, often on the head, ears and back.
Tuxedo: Mostly black with a white chest and often white paws, like a little tuxedo.
Phantom: Mostly black with lighter markings above the eyes, on the muzzle, chest and legs. Phantom markings can be tan or white.
Merle: A marbled black, gray and white coat. Merle is rare in Maltipoos.
Are Black and White Maltipoos Rare?
They are less common than white, cream and apricot Maltipoos, but not extremely rare. To get black and white puppies, the Poodle parent is usually black or parti, and even then only some puppies in a litter end up with a black and white coat. Many families join a breeder's waiting list if they want this look.
Will a Black and White Maltipoo Change Color?
The white parts will stay white, but the black can fade to a softer gray or silver as some Maltipoos age, especially if they carry the Poodle fading gene. Most black and white Maltipoos keep good contrast for many years. Learn more about Maltipoo color changes and see every coat color in our Maltipoo colors gallery.
Caring for a Black and White Coat
Black and white Maltipoos need the same grooming as any Maltipoo: brushing a few times a week, a bath every 3 to 4 weeks and a professional groom every 4 to 8 weeks. White areas around the eyes and mouth can show tear stains, so a daily face wipe helps keep the contrast crisp. See our Maltipoo grooming guide for haircut ideas.
